The College of Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for Academic Advising Coordinator. This position has the responsibility of oversight of the operations of the advising process and a reduced assigned caseload of approximately 200 or less students to provide comprehensive academic advising for undergraduate engineering and computer science majors. The senior advisor is responsible for determining programming and establishing policies and procedures for the department and works with Director of Student Success, the Associate Dean and Department Heads on curriculum and policy issues. The Advising Coordinator provides information and training for the academic advisors in day-to-day functions in the advising unit, resolving issues related to students' academic concerns, and counseling advisors on higher level advising issues. This position acts as a mediator for internal and external contacts on matters requiring curriculum and policy decisions. This position manages the peer tutoring program, training and supervising up to 15 students within the program, and completes administrative tasks associated with the peer mentoring program.

Further Student Advising Duties:
  • Provide a substantive advising appointment as required for each student which includes positive, open-ended questions to allow students to explore their goals, interests, strengths, values, and concerns.
  • Educate students about curricular requirements, academic standards, and academic milestones related to an intended/chosen academic program.
  • Encourage students' holistic engagement with the college experiences (academically, socially, culturally, and professionally).
  • Use critical thinking skills to provide a proactive level of advising that is accurate and encompasses all areas of impact on students, to include areas such as financial aid, career services, progression of classes and opportunities for student success.
  • Serve as a contact person, academic coach, and advocate for prospective students seeking an engineering or computer science degree at UTC and provide a level of service that is responsive, timely, and accurate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operations: Determines effective and efficient policies and procedures for academic advising unit in the College of Engineering and Computer Science; resolving issues, troubleshooting, and addressing students' academic concerns; evaluates and determines impact on degree progression, class scheduling, and internal advising policies or processes; recommended courses of action and work accordingly with the Director of Student Success.

Advising Caseload: Maintain a reduced caseload of approximately 200 or less students to provide comprehensive academic advising for undergraduate engineering and computer science majors; counseling and coaching students to identify and overcome student academic challenges and providing personalized academic plans and information for campus resources as needed.

Training: Provide training to all unit Academic Advisors with updated information and providing training support for new advisors who join the Unit; provide coaching to advisors on higher level issues.

Departmental Support: Function as Advising coordinator with the curriculum committee, academic department heads, and associate dean in the College of Engineering and Computer Science on curriculum changes, policy issues, and class scheduling; tracks and collects advising data for the College of Engineering and Computer Science for reporting purposes.

Recruiting and Orientation: Act as coordinator for orientation, information sessions, and assists the Director with recruiting opportunities; provides oversight in supporting recruiting events, orientation, academic fairs; review informational material and provide accurate academic input for student information.

  • Possesses strong organization and analytical skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
  • Possesses the ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements
  • Possesses sound decision-making and leadership skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office, Excel, and knowledge of various software programs
  • Knowledge of Banner and EAB Navigate

Minimum Qualifications: Typically requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Five years of experience as an academic advisor at a regionally accredited university within the fields of computer science or engineering. A bachelor's degree in an education related field. Advanced degree or working toward an advanced degree highly preferred. Experience with Excel, Banner, and Navigate software systems. Evidence of ability to collaborate with and support academic departments.
