Primary Purpose
The mechanical lab technician will be responsible for providing technical support for faculty and students in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. This will include support for student projects, related instructional labs, and faculty research.

Essential Functions
Machinery Operation and Fabrication:

  • Fabricate parts and fixtures to support instructional labs and student projects.
  • Fabricate parts and fixtures for faculty research.

    Lab Maintenance:
  • Organize, test and maintain engineering lab equipment and components in coordination with faculty and other laboratory staff.
  • Assists faculty in preparation of experiments and demonstrations prior to class meeting to confirm proper and safe operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain a reference library of scientific catalogs, troubleshooting guides, and operation and parts manuals for laboratory equipment as requested.

    Purchasing and Budgeting:
  • Receive, distribute, track and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment parts.
  • Advise and prepare purchase order requests for equipment and tool purchases for the machine shop and laboratories.
  • Prepare suggestions and budgets for the continuous upkeep and improvement of lab spaces.

    Safety:
  • Monitor compliance with University and California safety standards and assure that faculty and students using laboratories are compliant with safety training.
  • Maintain current knowledge of rules and regulations regarding equipment use and safety.
  • Document the safety processes and procedures in each lab.
  • Instruct and supervise students on the use of equipment to ensure safe operation.

    Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in engineering technology or a science related field including two (2) years' experience in safe operation of equipment for the fabrication of parts and fixtures.
  • Proficiency in the operation of computer numeric controlled (CNC) machinery including mills and lathes.
  • Proficiency in the operation of traditional machinery including mills and lathes.
  • Proficiency in welding (MIG, TIG, Stick, gas welding and soldering of aluminum and steel).
  • Proficiency in MS Office for general communication and documentation.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher preferably in Engineering Technology or Science related field.
  • Experience in working effectively with students, staff and faculty in a diverse institute of higher education.

    Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Expertise:
    General:

  • Experience working in a University laboratory and machine shop environment with faculty and students.

    Safety:
  • Knowledge of and experience with storing and handling laboratory equipment, safety and hazardous waste disposal procedures.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Knowledge of University of Pacific safety rules, policies and procedures.

    Machinery Operation:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 3D printing and associated 3D CAD modeling

    Communication:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and courteous manner with a variety of people, including students, employees, faculty, and the general public.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, procedure manuals, and charts to solve practical problems and/or ensure compliance with clear guidelines and safety standards.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

    Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
    Work is performed primarily in a lab setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards and electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work usually performed during standard business hours; however, additional days may be required to meet business needs.
