We seek candidates from a broad range of engineering disciplines who are committed to excellence in engineering education. The successful candidate will be an important part of the faculty team developing the new program. The position is for a 3-year term, renewable thereafter. Term faculty at USF serve in a teaching capacity on multi-year renewable contracts, and are eligible for promotion to Associate and Full Professor. They are members of the USF Faculty Association.

Overview of Engineering at USF

Upon his arrival at USF in 2014, President Fr. Paul Fitzgerald called for the development of a School of Engineering, with the goal of developing an innovative, forward-looking engineering school, grounded with an interdisciplinary undergraduate program and professionally-oriented graduate programs. Since then, we have been working to make this vision a reality and are in the midst of developing an engineering program that is nimble, responsive, and humane, and that develops engineers who are innovative, creative problem solvers with both strong technical skills and the vision, empathy, and humanistic perspective that come with a Jesuit liberal arts education. The San Francisco Bay Area provides a unique location to create such a program. We have been in extended dialogue with local industry and community leaders to be certain we are graduating students with the necessary skills.
We plan to begin by offering a single undergraduate degree in Engineering; currently, we are planning for concentrations in Electrical & Computer, Environmental, and Sustainable Built Environments Engineering. We are constructing a program that heavily emphasizes project-based learning and interdisciplinary team-based experiential education.
We plan to enroll the first class of baccalaureate students in the fall of 2020, with master's program(s) to be rolled out shortly thereafter.
Job Description:

We are looking for a faculty candidate with a passion for teaching and pedagogy and who is excited by the prospect of being part of the development of a new engineering program. The ideal candidate will have experience with engineering curriculum development and a passion for working with undergraduates. Candidates holding a PhD in any of the subdisciplines or related areas are encouraged to apply. Experience developing courses at multiple levels of the undergraduate curriculum is preferred as is experience with project-based learning, engineering design, and community engagement. Candidates should also have a strong, demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.

We are especially interested in applicants with a record of successful teaching and/or supervision of students and/or employees from all backgrounds (including first-generation college students, low-income students, racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ, etc.) and an interest in contributing to the development of our engineering curricular offerings, and research portfolio in ways that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess many, if not all, of the following characteristics:

An earned doctorate in an engineering discipline, along with a record of distinguished teaching.
Experience with curriculum design and hands-on education.
Experience with best practices in engineering education.
Experience supervising undergraduate design projects at all levels.
Experience with industry and community engagement.
An entrepreneurial, forward-looking mindset.
Strong interpersonal communication skills.
An understanding of the unique qualities of a Jesuit education and the ways in which engineering can promote Jesuit values.

Responsibilities
The faculty member will:

Work with the department Director, the Assistant Dean for Engineering, and the current faculty curriculum committee to complete the undergraduate engineering curriculum and then help to deliver it once the program is launched.
Teach core engineering courses in the new program.
Work with department faculty to implement best practices in engineering education and participate in professional development opportunities and conferences.
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, oversee the Director of Engineering Laboratories, acting as the faculty member responsible for the ideation and fabrication spaces.
Develop and nurture community engagement projects with local industry, government, and non-profits.
Develop and facilitate community and professional partnerships for project-based learning.
Facilitate and advise student co-curricular activities.
Work with industry, government, and non-profit partners to develop internship opportunities for the engineering undergraduates.
