Saturday 11pm- Sunday 7am
Tuesday 7am-3pm
Wednesday 3pm-11pm
Thursday 3pm-11pm
Friday 11pm - Saturday 7am

Job Description

Position Opening: Massachusetts 3rd Class Engineer
Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer; perform a variety of boiler room duties, primarily those with regards to firing, regulating and monitoring of high pressure steam boilers and system, air compressors, and auxiliary equipment following standard practices and procedures.
Knowledge of ASME Code Section VII, Chapter 146 of the General Laws 522 CMR 2.00 and understanding ASME Section 7.
Work from charts, manuals, schedules, gauges, written and verbal orders and instructions. Use various hand tools such as wrenches, scrapers, brushes, painting equipment.
Essential Functions
Perform firing, regulating and other duties incidental to operate high pressure boilers; build up and regulate pressures for transmission to various parts of the plant, depending on schedule and demand. Monitor a variety of control devices such as high temperatures and high pressure gauges, limit switches, valve, etc.; test water levels; stop, start and regulate pumps, blowers and auxiliary equipment. Read and interpret an array of pressure and water gauges, fuel meters and other control devices.
Test boiler water daily for solids, using standardized test procedures, and add chemical as required to maintain conditions. Prepare boilers for annual inspection.
Lubricate pumps, compressors, motors and other equipment to maintain efficient operation. Perform general duty maintenance such as replacing gauge glasses, pressure gauges, and minor pipefitting.
Assist in repair and maintenance duties both in and out of boiler room.
Maintain required records, readings, counts, etc.
Requisition needed materials and equipment and items.
Detect and report unsafe and defective equipment and material as well as unusual situations to supervisor. Observe and obey all safety rules, practices and procedures. Wear and employ all safety equipment and devices. Maintain work area and equipment in a neat and orderly manner. Perform other similar or related duties as required or requested.
Perform cooling tower water treatment testing on campus in accordance with contractor guidelines.
Knowledge of the following required:

Combustion flame safety equipment. Operation and testing of boiler safety controls. Knowledge of ASME Code Section VII, Chapter 146 of the General Laws and 522 CMR, opacity restrictions and smoke density devices required by 310 CMR Understanding of lockout / tagout procedures, MSDS, confined space entry.
Requirements:
  • Must have 3rd Class Engineer's License
  • Minimum of 5 years recent full-time experience as a Watch Engineer
  • High school diploma
  • Must be able to read and understand plans, blueprints, and schematics related to boiler operation
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Ability to work from written or verbal instructions
  • Skilled in the use of equipment and tools used in the trade
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license
  • Regular and reliable attendance is a requirement of the job
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must keep boiler room clean by sweeping, mopping, and wiping down
