About the Position:
Facilities Management is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining a safe, sustainable, and high quality learning and working environment for the campus community. Facilities Management provides oversight of university resources and assets and is responsible for the development of the University's facilities including land use planning, capital improvement, project development, construction, as well as facilities operations and maintenance including custodial services, landscape services, building trade services, mechanical and electrical, and recycling services. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Building Service Engineers team as a Supervising Building Service Engineer. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under supervision of the Mechanical Trades Manager, the Supervising Building Service Engineer (BSE) supervises the operation, maintenance, repair and installation of the heating and cooling equipment and related mechanical system equipment in the Central Plant and Campus buildings. The Supervising Building Service Engineer has expertise in central plant operations, power production, as well as chilled and hot water production in conjunction with thermal storage and PV power production. Supervises the daily operation of the Central Plant and schedules and assigns the work of the Building Service Engineers. Interacts with a diverse group of individuals and promotes team work. Performs scheduled maintenance and diagnostic tasks designed to reduce failures and to predict avoidable failures, well in advance of their occurrence. Modifies and installs components within the existing plumbing infrastructure as required, to meet the university's programmatic needs. The Supervising BSE has strong initiative and communication skills, and ensures timely and professional communication throughout all levels of the organization. Incumbent takes pride in every aspect of their work, leads by example, is inclusive of others thoughts and ideas, and creates and maintains an excellent environment of trust and teamwork. Performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience. Two or more years of experience working as a journey-level crafts worker in one or more applicable mechanical or related trades, including at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Thorough knowledge of high and low pressure boilers, heating, pneumatic, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and other mechanical equipment. Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment. General knowledge of ventilation principles, thermal dynamics, and closed water systems. Working knowledge of energy management systems including the ability to understand and use system features. Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques. Working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to renovation and installation projects. Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal safety codes and regulations pertaining to mechanical and HVAC systems. Ability to install, operate, and repair HVAC equipment and systems. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications. Ability to make rough sketches and estimate cost, time, and materials for mechanical work. Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems. Ability to prepare standard reports, provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants, and analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Ability to maintain currency in applicable industrial safety orders and regulations pertaining to facilities, HVAC, and related equipment. Ability to plan and direct the work of skilled crafts workers and semi-skilled workers and coordinate staffing, material, and equipment needs for multiple jobs and projects. Ability to perform basic design work, read blueprints, and work from plans and specifications. Ability to prepare rough sketches and read and interpret complex operating manuals. Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to ensure accuracy and maintenance of assigned record-keeping systems.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with a full range of mechanical systems including the operation, maintenance and service of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. DX systems, chilled water, hot water and steam systems, heat exchangers, centrifugal chillers, thermal energy storage, and cooling towers, chemical feed system, water treatment and chemicals, hot water and steam boilers; deionizers and water softeners, vacuum pumps, air compressors and pneumatic systems, automated energy management systems, sensors and controls, pumps, fans, valves and tanks, variable speed drives, and thermally stratified energy storage tanks; ability to use the Campus Energy Management System . Ability to use Word and Excel to complete work assignments.
