  • Position Summary:
    The University of Alaska Fairbanks is accepting applications for a full-time position supporting the development of our Aerospace Engineering programs. This position will be embedded within the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and will include teaching responsibilities for electrical/computer engineering topics, as well as aerospace engineering topics (eg, systems design for UAS/manned aircraft, missions design, communications, navigation, guidance, and controls systems). This position will initially be non-tenure track, with the possibility of being converted to a tenure track position upon the anticipated approval of UAF's Aerospace Engineering BS degree program. Notes: (1) UAF currently has a popular aerospace engineering minor, as well as a graduate certificate program. (2) In conjunction with this position, UAF is advertising for a similar position within the Department of Mechanical Engineering with a focus on aeronautical engineering and design topics.

    Duties:

    Service: Contributions to service can be for the public, university, or for professional associations and organizations. Service includes the application of teaching, research, and other scholarly and creative activity outside of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Service can be instructional, collaborative, or consultative in nature and is related to the faculty members' discipline or other publicly recognized expertise. Service can be contributions to university, college, school, institute, and departmental committees or governing bodies. Examples of service activities include active participation in professional organizations, discipline-oriented service organizations, or service to government or public committees.

    Writing publications. Develop new research and teaching areas. Help establish a strong externally funded program. Develop and teach an undergraduate and/or graduate course. Mentor and supervise graduate students. Teach one or more undergraduate courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content description. Hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Be proactive in developing and modifying curriculum for delivery and other teaching modalities.

    Research: Contributions to research, scholarly or creative activity must have one or more of the following characteristics: a) must occur in a public forum, b) must be evaluated by peers, c) must be evaluated by peers external to this institution so as to allow an objective judgment, and d) must be judged to make a contribution. Research may be demonstrated through books, reviews, monographs, bulletins, articles, proceedings, research data and metadata, and other scholarly works published by reputable journals. Funded research via competitive grants and contracts.

    Teaching: Must be highly organized, use class time efficiently, establish clear objectives, and have high expectations of students. Must develop good rapport with students and show enthusiasm for subject matter. Must encourage student participation, provide regular feedback to students and reward student learning success. Candidates are expected to teach foundational courses at the BS level, as well as advanced applied courses at the MS/PhD level.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    Demonstrated teaching ability
    Specialized background in Electrical or Computer Engineering applied to UAS/manned aircraft systems design (communications, navigation, guidance, and control systems).

    Typical Experience:
    It is desired for applicants to have direct experience in aerospace programs: manned/unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) design, mission analysis & design, subsystems design, ground support operations. Experience may be credited through applicable employment in aerospace-related industry/agencies, applied research, and focused educational programs.

    Required Education or Training:
    Blend of electrical or computer engineering, with aerospace engineering emphasis. Anticipated education would include:
    BS degree in electrical or computer engineering
    MS degree in electrical or computer engineering with applications in aerospace engineering
    PhD in aerospace engineering or electrical/computer engineering with emphasis in aerospace engineering

    Salary Information:

    This is a full-time, 9-month, exempt union represented faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. Salary is based on education and experience.
