Position Overview

Cascadia Colleges Instruction and Classroom Support Technicians play a critical role in providing an integrated science education. They guide students in the use of technologies and enable faculty to implement cutting-edge teaching practices by researching, procuring, implementing, and supporting new laboratory techniques. They also ensure that Cascadia science labs are safe learning environments.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Natural Science Labs (ADNSL), the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 3 Engineering/Physics and or other Physical Sciences will coordinate and provide senior-level instructional laboratory support to undergraduate courses in these areas. This position is responsible for coordinating instructional support activities, designing/developing instructional support programs or designing and constructing equipment in assigned subjects. This position provides support to courses requiring an emphasis in complex design and development tasks such as developing experiments/demonstrations where only general theoretical concepts are identified, equipment software curricula and designing instructional support applications based on current research findings.

The position interacts with other Instruction & Classroom Support Technicians, and Cascadia Science faculty. And as well with some coordination with the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) employees to complete assignments. Questions regarding work and projects are directed to the ADNSL or the department responsible (i.e. Purchasing, UW Environmental Health and Safety). Duties include ordering, collecting, and/or repair and maintaining the necessary materials, samples, and equipment for each experiment, being present as necessary in laboratory classes to provide guidance to the students and assistance to the faculty; guiding students on proper equipment usage, personal protective equipment, and anticipated hazards; checking for understanding of the material being covered; providing assistance in applying material demonstrated by the lab; regularly attending meetings with faculty and other technicians to maintain laboratory health and safety standards, equipment maintenance and replacement, and revision or development of laboratory experiments and demonstrations.

As the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 3 Engineering/Physics and or other Physical Sciences it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.

Initial Salary: $4,093.00 - $4,632.00 Monthly DOE + 5% King County Premium Pay (KCPP)

Supervising Position: Assistant Director of the Natural Science Labs (ADSL)
Essential Duties

Instructional and Accessibility Support:
  • Assemble, prepare set up and testing of new equipment and materials for laboratory experiments using safety procedures in handling hazardous materials, laser radiation, high temperature plastics, etc.
  • Develops scientific instructional programs, and laboratory procedures in conjunction with instructors.
  • Set up and perform classroom demonstrations during lecture sessions, as needed.
  • Search literature to determine methods to improve laboratory techniques and the teaching of scientific principles to students.
  • Develop standard operating procedures, and materials for training students/staff on specific use of specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Operate /perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on laboratory and demonstration instruments/equipment; instruct numerous, diverse students - including work study students - as well as faculty in the use of equipment.
  • Coordinate with SAS to maintain currency in relevant assistive technologies and promote applicable UDL principles in labs.
  • Collaborate with ADNSL and ICSTs on appropriate disposal method for waste generated in laboratory experiments.
  • Collaborate with ADNSL and ICSTs plans for facility and equipment changes.
  • Develops and designs hands-on demonstrations, projects, models and activities for engineering and physics students.
  • Understand and recognize important factors that affect the learning environment and modify them appropriately to achieve optimum learning (CHECK deleted bullet and combine).


Lab Monitoring:
  • Monitor assigned laboratories to ensure compliance with safety policy; assist in the development of safe laboratory procedures.
  • Coordinate use of all laboratory space, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Supervise assigned personnel i.e. work-study students and part time hourly employees.




Safety:
  • Understand and follow applicable laws, regulations, and other standards to establish and/or maintain a safe work environment.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to ensure they are accomplished and meet strict deadlines as set forth in syllabus/class schedule.
  • Learn and abide by Cascadia College policies and procedures.
  • Use safety procedures in scientific preparation for laboratory programs and field-oriented courses in the handling hazardous materials such as acids, radiation, etc.
  • Develop and maintain safe use of engineering and physics equipment.

Lab Supplies and Equipment Purchasing:
  • Order and dispense supplies, equipment, and materials; maintain records.
  • Evaluate equipment specifications and make purchase recommendations.
  • Prepare cost estimates.
  • Determine need for materials, equipment, and instruments necessary for assigned course load; order or procure necessary items within budgetary limitations.
  • Support the maintenance of the computerized inventory of laboratory equipment, materials, and chemicals.

Other Duties as Assigned:
  • As needed, collaborate with other instructional support areas to coordinate support efficiency. (i.e. Bock Center)
  • Collaborate as needed with UWB lab personnel
  • Participate in campus-wide events as directed.
  • Participate on hiring committees.
  • Participate in other committees as appropriate.
  • Support labs in other natural science disciplines.

Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree with significant coursework in Engineering/Physics and or other Physical Sciences or related science field OR one years experience as Scientific Instructional Technician OR equivalent education/experience to substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as license/certification/registration.
  • Experience with managing hazardous waste and in compliance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a multicultural workplace and educational environment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Combination of training, formal education and/or research, experience in an Engineering/Physics and or other Physical Sciences related field.
  • College coursework in other natural science field.
  • Certification and/or training in First Aid and CPR.
  • Prior responsibility for technician support of a college-level science course, preferably specific experience in support of Engineering/Physics and or other Physical Sciences laboratory curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to support accessibility in lab settings.
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of common educational software.

Hands-on experience with power and construction tools.

Knowledge of:
  • Key concepts in Engineering/Physics Sciences for undergraduate courses.
  • Chemical use and laboratory safety.
  • Basic principles of Universal Design and lab accommodations.
  • Self-Knowledge, development and continual learning; actively acquires new skills and competencies; accepts personal responsibility to develop talents and knowledge.

Skill in:
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in instructional laboratory support.

Physical Work Environment

Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The College is currently in hybrid work operations, with some assignments completed in an online environment. This position is generally expected to be on-campus 4-5 days per week with the option to work remotely on occasion. Employees must provide their own remote workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. During on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means. Ability to work weekends and evenings when appropriate or needed may be required.

Positions in this class typically require operating a computer, communicating, observing, and repetitive motions.

Works with high-voltage equipment that poses a risk to individuals with pacemakers or other life-saving electronic medical devices.

May be asked to assist in field work with wet or unstable ground.
