Ethics in Engineering Faculty Search

The School of Engineering (https://engineering.stanford.edu/) at Stanford University invites applications for an all-ranks faculty search, with an appointment as tenure-track assistant professor, tenure-track or tenured associate professor, or tenured full professor in the School of Engineering. The primary departmental home of the appointee will be in one of the departments in the School of Engineering (https://engineering.stanford.edu/faculty-research/departments).

Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a Ph.D. in the advertised field or a closely related one. They must be leading research scholars, with a proven track record of identifying ethical and societal challenges in engineering and creating explicit frameworks to address those challenges in the design of engineered systems. Ideally, these frameworks are useful for others and contribute to a literature on ethics in engineering or engineering and society.

The successful candidate will also be expected to develop innovative approaches to integrating ethical and societal considerations into engineering courses, collaborate with ethicists and engineers across a broad problem domain, be embedded in (or lead) system-building efforts, and be a thought leader both in academia and outside. Example problem domains include, but are not limited to, machine learning models, bioengineering products, sustainable infrastructure, and algorithmically infused socio-economic systems.

The School of Engineering and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an inclusive academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and outlooks. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these ideals. Additional information about Stanford's IDEAL initiative may be found here: https://ideal.stanford.edu/about-ideal/diversity-statement

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, 3-page statement of research and teaching, including accomplishments and plans, 2 representative publications, and names of 5 references.

Candidates should apply online at https://facultypositions.stanford.edu/en-us/job/494648/open-rank-faculty-position-in-school-of-engineering-ethics-in-engineering. Review of applications will begin immediately and applications will be accepted through February 18, 2024.
