Position Description
Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Senior Application Engineer to play a strategic and collaborative role in shaping how Slate by Technolutions is adopted, governed, and supported across campus as the university's enterprise CRM platform for Student Admissions, Recruiting, and Success.
This position focuses on customer engagement, solution design, and CRM governance, working in close partnership with an established Senior Engineer who brings deep backend technical expertise. Together, these roles form the foundation of Slate leadership at Seattle University, balancing architecture, implementation, and institutional alignment.
The Senior Application Engineer will play a critical role in the university's implementation of Workday Student by leading the assessment of Slate-based functions that may need to migrate to Workday to ensure seamless processes, real-time reporting, and an integrated experience for students.
Ideal candidates are curious problem-solvers who can connect technical systems to people and purpose. This is a highly collaborative role that blends functional analysis, system configuration, and governance leadership to help ensure Slate and its integrations with other enterprise systems are sustainable, effective, and empowering.
Key Job Responsibilities
Functional Leadership and Partner Engagement
- Serve as a trusted partner to units across campus, including Admissions, Enrollment Services, and Student Success.
- Facilitate discussions to understand business needs and translate them into practical, scalable Slate solutions.
- Coordinate closely with the ITS colleagues to develop solutions that meet both functional goals and technical standards.
- Guide users through solution design with empathy, clarity, and respect for varying levels of technical fluency.
Solution Design and CRM Governance
- Lead the design of user-facing components and business workflows in Slate (forms, rules, dashboards, communications, etc.).
- Champion the development and stewardship of CRM governance models and user group structures.
- Steward the Slate product roadmap in partnership with campus leaders, balancing innovation with alignment and long-term sustainability.
- Serve as a central point of contact for functional configuration decisions and change management.
Enterprise System Alignment and Integration Support
- Collaborate with Workday leads and ITS teams to align Slate's design and data model with enterprise systems and strategies.
- Support data flows, integrations, and reporting infrastructure that connect Slate with Workday and other campus systems.
- Translate functional requirements into system designs that prioritize performance, maintainability, and data integrity.
System Configuration and Support
- Configure system elements in Slate using administrative tools and low-code methods (e.g., Liquid, HTML, JavaScript, CSS).
- Support query building, data exports, and reports to empower partner teams with meaningful insights.
- Troubleshoot issues and test enhancements in collaboration with technical colleagues and end users.
- Maintain clear, user-centered documentation for processes, configurations, and decision-making frameworks.
Workday Implementation Responsibilities
Transition Planning: Slate to Workday Student
- Facilitate analysis and stakeholder engagement to evaluate which Slate for Student Success functions should transition to Workday Student.
- Develop and recommend transition strategies and priorities, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and a seamless student experience.
- Identify areas where Slate remains the appropriate platform and ensure ongoing support for those use cases.
- Manage collaboration between ITS, campus partners, and governance groups to deliver a successful migration of key functions from Slate to Workday Student.
Qualifications
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity, and the ability to live out the university's mission, vision, and values.
- A bachelor's degree and three to five years of previous work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Experience configuring and managing Slate by Technolutions, including working with populations, rules, queries, and communications.
- Proficiency with browser-based scripting and configuration (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and familiarity with Liquid templating.
- Strong understanding of relational database concepts, including data modeling, referential integrity, and query development (e.g., SQL or Slate configurable joins).
- Exposure to object-oriented or hierarchical data structures and how they relate to CRM system design and extensibility.
- Experience supporting or coordinating data integrations and interoperability across enterprise systems (e.g., APIs, SFTP, middleware, ETL tools).
- Familiarity with Workday or other student information systems, with an emphasis on understanding the importance of data alignment and integrity across integrated platforms.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to distill complex needs into user-friendly, maintainable digital solutions.
- Demonstrated customer service orientation and the capability to organize, analyze, prioritize, and problem-solve within a fast-paced environment.
- Attention to detail, general flexibility, and the capacity to work both independently and in close collaboration with others.
- Ability to produce effective, professional, and accurate communications, and to impart difficult or sensitive information with clarity and tact.
- Exposure to best practices in data management, process validation, system integration, change control, and test coordination.
- All positions at Seattle University require a criminal history background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior involvement in a Slate or Workday implementation or expansion effort.
- Background working in or closely with Admissions, the Registrar's Office, or Student Financial Services.
- Familiarity with data governance frameworks, product governance groups, or enterprise roadmap planning.
- Experience with enterprise reporting or data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and how they interface with CRM data sources.

Compensation at a Glance
Annual Salary Range: $97,000 - $107.000
Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.

Hybrid Eligible
This position may be eligible for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of an introductory work period of 3-6 months. This may mean that a hybrid eligible role will begin on-campus initially and then will transition to hybrid format following onboarding and training.
