Assistant Research Professor, Center for Research Computing

Description: The Center for Research Computing (CRC), a unit within Notre Dame Research (NDR) seeks a scientist to pursue a research and development portfolio focused on the delivery of next generation sensors (including microcontrollers and PLCs) and the IoT frameworks supporting them. This position utilizes a wide variety of computer engineering, electrical engineering and basic mechanical skills in order to focus on research collaborator's highly technical component and system design requirements.

This scientist will work with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, applied mathematicians, computer scientists and community/commercial partners. The individual should have experience with streaming and unstructured data, from sources such as heterogeneous sensors, satellites, and drones.

This individual must be intellectually curious and an independent and fast learner. The position will focus on the development of sensors and platforms requiring the ability to apply the following technologies:
1. Hardware for prototyping sensors on commercial carrier boards such as Arduino, Espressif ESP32, RasPi, NVIDIA Jetson and XLINX FPGAs
2. Software for prototyping sensors: Embedded Linux (Unbuntu Core, Mongoose), Yocto Builder, Firmware, Sensor Drivers
3. Docker/Kubernetes. For scalable and modular systems of sensors that can be deployed using cloud computing methodologies. 4. Computer infrastructure and software development tools (CAD, Python, Compilers, IDEs, JupyterHub, GitHub)
5. Linked Data Methodologies. Data from sensors use standardized controlled vocabularies in formats such as JSON-LD.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, or related discipline.

Familiarity in sensor hardware, sensor software and scientific data acquisition practices.
The use of tools to build and operate computing infrastructure including programming languages such as C, Python, the Linux operating system and networking/communication protocols. Familiarity with standard documentation (ReadtheDocs) and version control (GitHub) tools; experience with data analysis and visualization tools such as JupyterHub and Plotly.

Experience with one or more of the following: Containerization of computational codes, unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAV), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices, large scale scientific instruments/frameworks, and PCB design with Altium or EAGLE CAD.
