What will you do as a Project Mechanical Engineer in the Office of Design & Construction?

The Project Mechanical Engineer provides expertise for construction of all new buildings, large and small renovations, HVAC systems upgrades and internal department-initiated projects. The Project Mechanical Engineer plays a key role in all capital and Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC projects from planning through construction closeout.

The position will advise and provide engineering direction on construction, utility, repair, deferred maintenance and energy projects and all mechanical related components and projects, and provide support in project planning and budgeting.

The Project Mechanical Engineer will also design system upgrades for campus small remodel projects involving HVAC, plumbing, controls, utility and energy systems, and assess existing building systems in support of Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM.)

As a member of the Design and Construction Team, a typical day will include responding to requests from the campus community and CPFM units for mechanical, plumbing and HVAC systems related issues and/or concerns, which may involve field investigation in buildings and utility tunnels. Reviewing plans and specifications, approving RFI's and submittals and conducting on-site project visits, which vary based on project schedules and phasing. The Mechanical Engineer will prioritize daily work between capital project documents, support for CPFM units, in-house design and project development.

This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.

What you need to be considered for this role (Minimum Qualifications)
  • A Bachelor's degree in either Civil, Electrical, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management Engineering, or Energy Management Engineering; AND
  • Four years of engineering experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Hold a current Mechanical Engineering Professional Engineering License in Oregon, or ability to obtain Mechanical Engineering Professional Engineering License in Oregon within one year of hire.

  • Experience as a Mechanical/HVAC designer or consultant
  • Proficient with project design review and construction administration
  • Experience with Siemens or other DDC control system.
  • Experience working with district utility systems.
  • Experience with MEP system analysis and studies.
  • Proficient with Autodesk design software.
  • Proficient with Pipe-Flow or other hydraulic modelling software
  • LEED Accredited Professional.

Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM) is a vibrant department, which comprises five units, and approximately 270 employees: Facilities Services, Utilities & Energy, Campus Planning, Office of Sustainability, and Design & Construction. The units of CPFM strive to provide excellent customer service to the University of Oregon campus and operate with the highest professional standards, communicating and collaborating with customers to support the stewardship of the campus.

The Office of Design and Construction (D&C) works closely with other CPFM units, faculty, and staff across campus to deliver successful, budget-conscious projects. Project sizes range from under $50,000 to over $100M. Project types include small departmental moves, interior renovations, new building construction, and many different types in between.
